Pedestrian Killed Retrieving Package Lost from Vehicle

On December 23, Alaska State Troopers received a report from a motorist on the Glenn Highway stating he struck a person standing in the roadway. Investigation revealed the motorist came upon a car with its lights on, stopped in the opposite lane of travel. As he passed the vehicle, a person suddenly appeared in the roadway and he was unable to avoid striking her. The woman died as a result of the collision. Responding troopers later learned the woman called dispatch to report she lost a box from her vehicle and she was going to attempt to locate it.

Drivers hauling any type of cargo should ensure that the cargo is properly secured and that the height of the cargo is such that it shall safely pass under obstructions such as under/over passes along the intended rout before placing the vehicle in motion.
