Hockey is a staple in Fairbanks and Alaska. Here, kids take to the ice almost as soon as they can walk—soon graduating from neighborhood games to youth leagues. Then, for young adults, the North American Hockey League (NAHL) gives them an opportunity to develop into outstanding players. Many of the players in the junior circuit go on to play at the collegiate and professional levels.
Like anyone else native to the Fairbanks area, we’re gearing up to watch the Fairbanks Ice Dogs face off against the Kenai River Brown Bears.
The Ice Dogs, a team in the Midwest Division of the North American Hockey League, has a cult following in Fairbanks. In 2011, the team fought tooth and nail to become the NAHL Robertson Cup champions.
We’re hoping the team can bring about a similar success this year.
The game is set to take place Friday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Big Dipper Ice Arena (1920 Lathrop St. in Fairbanks). Admission to the game is twelve dollars in advance and fifteen dollars at the gate.
You can purchase tickets online on the Fairbanks Ice Dogs website.
We hope to see you there in gray, maroon, and sky blue!
