On September 5, Anchorage Police Department responded to a collision at the intersection of New Seward Highway and Northern Lights Boulevard. A car heading west on Northern Lights Blvd. struck and killed a man in the road on the east side of the Seward Highway intersection. Initial investigation is that the pedestrian was struck at or near the crosswalk and was driven through the intersection before becoming dislodged from the vehicle. The car continued westbound on Northern Lights Blvd. The driver came forward Monday night after investigators had asked the public for help in locating the vehicle and its driver. The driver was arrested and charged with manslaughter, failure to render aid and tampering with physical evidence in the collision.

Pedestrian Safety Tips
Cross the street only at intersections. DO NOT JAYWALK. Use marked crosswalks where available. Do not cross in the middle of the street or between parked cars. Drivers are not expecting pedestrians to cross mid-block and you are more likely to be hit if you do this. Avoid walking in traffic where there are no sidewalks or cross walks. If you have to walk on a road that doesn’t have sidewalks, walk facing traffic. Wear bright colors or reflective clothing if you are walking near traffic at night. Carry a flashlight when walking in the dark.
Sadly, accidents such as this one happen more often than they should. Motorists are expected to use a reasonable amount of care on the road. If you or a loved one has been injured or killed in a car accident due to someone’s lack of care-or negligence you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries or other damages.
