AKDOT&PF REMINDS DRIVERS TO PREPARE FOR WINTER CONDITIONS

|

The first accumulating snow of the year began falling October 20 in Interior Alaska and is expected to continue through the evening.  The Department of Transportation is warning motorists that the first snow of the season can be dangerous as the snow can melt at intersections and refreeze causing a loss of traction.  The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities reminds drivers to be prepared for winter driving and offers the following tips to help you have a safe commute.

Report taken from Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities.com

First – check the weather for warnings, watches and advisories.  If you have the option, wait it out.  Consider staying home until the roads are cleared and sanded.

Second – Prepare your vehicle.  Make sure your vehicle is properly equipped for winter driving conditions or in case of an emergency.  Carry extra provisions in case you get stranded, i.e. flares, candles, blankets, food, shovel, etc.  Clear off all the snow and ice from your vehicle and turn on your headlights.  Make sure to use your turn signals also.

Third – Reduce your speed. Drive according to road and weather conditions.  Posted speed limits are for dry pavement.  Watch for snow removal equipment and give them plenty of room.  Leave plenty of room for stopping. It takes more time to stop when the roads are wet or icy.  Even if the rest of the road is in good condition, overpasses & bridges may be icy.

Fourth – Stay alert.  Watch for large animals crossing the highways.
